What is it?
Over our lifetime we accumulate many habits and, while many of these are necessary, others can interfere with our natural coordination and balance. This affects the way in which we move, stand, sit and even breathe. These patterns of misuse become ingrained and may ultimately lead to problems such as back pain or repetitive strain injury (RSI).
The Alexander Technique is a practical, self-help method in which you learn to undo patterns of misuse and accumulated muscle tension to regain your natural poise and coordination. The Technique integrates thinking and movement, so that both mind and body achieve a better state of balance. With time, people usually develop a calmer frame of mind and greater ability to cope with stress.
The Alexander Technique is suitable for people of all ages and levels of physical fitness. Anyone can benefit — all you need is a willingness to take a fresh look at yourself and be open to change.
The Alexander Technique is used by a wide range of organisations including ICI, the Guardian, the BBC, Hewlett Packard and the British Library. It is also taught at music and drama colleges such as the Royal College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Juilliard School in New York and RADA.
